Host institution – IMDEA Materials

All fellowships are hosted exclusively at IMDEA Materials Institute.

IMDEA Materials Institute (Madrid, Spain) is a leading research centre established in 2007 as part of a strategic initiative by the Madrid Regional Government to attract talented researchers and foster the region’s knowledge-based economy. With a strong focus on structural materials, multiscale simulation, in-situ characterisation, and multifunctional materials, IMDEA Materials has built an excellent reputation in fundamental and disruptive EU-funded science programmes such as ERC, MSCA, and EIC Pathfinder.

The Institute’s unique blend of advanced research and strong collaboration with industry through direct R&D contracts makes it stand out among similar institutions. In recognition of its excellence, IMDEA Materials received the prestigious “María de Maeztu” seal from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation in 2019, joining the SOMMa network of Spain’s top research institutions.

IMDEA Materials’ success is deeply connected to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). 26 MSCA Postdoctoral Fellows (PFs) have contributed to enhancing the Institute’s scientific excellence with success rates consistently higher than the EU average.

As the world faces pressing challenges in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), IMDEA Materials is positioned to drive innovation in key areas such as renewable energy storage, lightweight structures, material recycling, artificial intelligence in materials development, and personalized medical devices. These innovations are crucial to the EU’s goals of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and leading in technologies that combat climate change through its Industrial Strategy.

The ATENEA programme is IMDEA Materials’ contribution to these goals, focusing on attracting and training outstanding Postdoctoral Researchers (PRs). ATENEA will support IMDEA Materials in its mission to be a scientific leader in emerging research fields, boosting PRs’ careers through cutting-edge scientific training and exposure to an extensive network of academic and industrial partners. The programme will help create a highly skilled workforce, aligned with the European Skills Agenda, driving sustainable competitiveness and social resilience.

IMDEA Materials is also proud to have received the Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R) award in 2015, renewed in 2023. This recognition underscores the Institute’s commitment to providing researchers with fair, transparent, and excellent working conditions in line with the European Charter for Researchers & the Code of Conduct.
